< Memory of Water > – Robust and Adorable Life
It has been over 20 years since I moved to Niigata, and although I often gaze towards the sea where the silhouette of Sado Island can be seen in the distance, I had never once visited Sado Island.
When I look to the mountains, Mount Yahiko always shows its distinct shape, offering a different view each day beneath the changing sky. One autumn day, I heard a loud splash from a small stream flowing down from the mountain, and to my astonishment, I saw a salmon over 90 cm long swimming upstream right at my feet.
At dusk, the island of Sado seems to rise with a roar and begin to dance. The island, the rocks, and the waves of the strait come alive. The salmon that swam up the stream leave behind countless eggs before they die.
As the snow falls and small lives stir beneath it, I found myself imagining that such things might happen.
I would be delighted if you could take the time to visit.
